Out of Pocket不只是掏腰包

　　美国话里有一句话：There's more than just meets the eye，意思是除了表层意义以外，还有更深一层意思。这句话用在out of pocket上，可以说是恰如其分。

　　out of pocket，一看这个说法，人们很容易想到，这是掏腰包的意思。对，这是表面意思，比如说，The out-of-pocket expense for this tripis$500,and the rest is covered by the company.(这次旅行，个人只需掏500美元，其他的都由公司包了)。注意这里out-of-pocket用了连字符-，表示一个整体概念：掏腰包。

　　但在美语中，常听到这样的说法：I%26rsquo;mout of pocket these days.在这句话里，说out of pocket是掏腰包就讲不通了。这句话的真正意思是I%26rsquo;m unavailable these days或I%26rsquo;m absent these days%26mdash;%26mdash;%26mdash;这一段我不在。

　　据说，这个说法源于另一个说法They are living in one another's pocket（他们终日厮混在一起）。既然pocket能形象地描绘了像挤在一个口袋里一样的亲密，那么out of pocket便也可以说是不在或失踪了。
